Hello there all, hope you are okay. So I wanted to write a little something in regards to Dan's new work on paper.
Dan has been using new techniques on his recent canvasses that I think add great dimensions to his work. This is now spilling out onto his latest works on paper. These pieces are giving him an opportunity to be experimental, and to produce what are turning out to be some superb originals.
Watching the work build up layer by layer has been amazing. Dan's studio practice is great. As he sets about a session of printing you never really know how it's going to work out. A piece may appear more than once as it may be reprinted on multiple times, but what always amazes me is how different they are each time. Something that has left the studio mainly blue with one or two images on it, may return from Dan's a completely different colour and fully overdrawn and painted. I always look forward to seeing the final piece which invariably it's completely different to the thing that I saw leave.
As the hours push on, with a beer on the go, the studio energy flows. Out comes the hand-made papers. Dan starts to work through some of his ideas and as we print he starts to freehand on the papers, even at the same time as the screen is being lifted. It is not usual studio practice to have someone running around sketching on the paper before I've had time to lift the screen, but this makes for a great studio session. As some of the work progresses, Dan may want it put away for another session or it's whisked off to his studio to be worked on.
There are moments when things in the studio need to be clean down or something needs attention. It is during this time that Dan can be found really going for it, pastels and charcoal and all kinds of materials flying around. As an example, take the wonderful pieces at the Forster gallery. I was washing down some equipment and Dan was talking about his childhood and a situation that had occurred to do with a set of knives in a shop. Once I had finished up and joined Dan to work on the next screen, there he was squinting at his work closing one eye, putting a touch here and a dash there. In front of him were the beginnings of those wonderful pieces not quite finished, but you could really see the energy in them.
There may be others to follow but Dan is being very selective about what he puts out. There is some work on paper that I would really like to see out there, but Dan will not let it see the light of day unless he's really happy with it. I think it is a very interesting new way to go and the experimentation is leading to some wonderful results. He has some great images and materials lined up. All I can say is a next session is booked and I can't wait to see what happens.

Is that the story about his sister?

Yes I think so. So as I remember it this is how it went. Dan, aged seven, saw in his local newsagent an "amazing" set of five knives. It was a deal on a set of five for five pounds, Dan wanted them so bad that he stole the money from his sister. He has said that he can't believe what people must have thought of it with a set of shinny knives newly in his possession and his sister light to the tune of five pounds. Apparently his dad had said that it was because Dan was disturbed and must be going through a fase (yeah right, he grew out of that one didn't he!) so a great bit of the story is that two Christmas later Dan tearfully gave his sister a letter with the words 'SORRY' on it and a fiver inside!

I've only very recently discovered Dan's work.I bumped into an old school friend who's a (toast) artist - Lennie payne, and he told me about Dan over a beer (or eight). Dead England and the Bible Studies art blew me away. There's so much going on in those pieces. I'm looking forward to seeing some work in person, rather than trawling through the web, and think I need to do some serious saving, or bash a couple of cards. I did manage to get a False Icons exhibition poster from Ink D, which had been signed by Dan - an unexpected, but great bonus.
Thanks for posting the insight into the ongoing work - I'm definitely going to do my utmost to get to the next exhibition.

interesting to look at this picture again, in light of the media's outcry over the youth and knife crime. Suddenly something that was so personal to dan at the time, is very topical. wonder what others think ?
